Teen Programs AT THE GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Friends of the Georgetown Public Library sponsored two major teen events during 2011.  The first was the wrap-up party for the Read it Forward program.  Read it Forward is a collaborative, fun reading experience between the GISD middle schools and the Georgetown Public Library.  One book is chosen to be read by the students at all three middle schools. One hundred copies of the chosen book are scattered around each of the three campuses.  When a student finds a copy of the book, he or she reads the book, and then passes it on to another student to read.  After the book has been read, each student logs into a special website and writes a review.  At the end of Read it Forward, a party is held at the library with prizes and fun activities to reward the kids who participated.  The book for 2010 was Killer Pizza by Greg Taylor.  We were lucky enough to have Greg Taylor attend the wrap up party held in April.  The kids spent time with a real life author reinforcing the importance and pleasure of reading.

Teen Summer Reading 2011 was the summer to "Read Stuff, Do Stuff, Eat Stuff".  Teens spent the summer months doing just that.  Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library, teens ages 12-18 had the opportunity to express themselves, read, and have fun at the library this summer. The teen summer reading program kept teens busy during the months of June and July with events, an art contest, and prizes earned for time spent reading.

Summer reading kicked off in style with a gaming day that included video games, Minute to Win It games, and a giant hamster ball.  Other activities during June were crafts, a drawing workshop with artist Tony Sansevero, Bollywood day where teens learned about the culture of India including eating Indian food, and airbrush tattoos.  July was eventful with crafts, yoga and smoothies, a songwriting workshop, an Iron Chef competition, building animated Lego robots, and a Japanese tea ceremony.

The third annual Teen Art Contest was a huge success.  Art was displayed in the second floor hallway, giving the teen's work a wide audience.  This year along with more traditional media, photography, and digital art, we expanded to include 3D pieces.
