The Latest on the Wow!Mobile

Bookmobile UPDATE 12/5/11

The Friends have raised over $120,000 to purchase the WOW!MOBILE (that's  Words on Wheels, if you haven't heard) for the Georgetown library.  The customization process is well underway, adding the shelving, a desk, an automatic lift in the back to get book carts on and off the vehicle, and other necessary modifications.  Once it reaches Georgetown in March the 'skin' or covering will be applied, bookmobile librarian Michele Harber will load up approximately 3,000-4,000 books and media, and she'll be off on her round of stops five days a week.  Currently the route until June will include Stonehaven Senior Center; Park Place Long Term; Park Place Assisted Living; Georgetown Rehab and Nursing (formerly Riverhaven); San Gabriel Senior Village; Sterling House; Mariposa; Estrella Oaks; Wesleyan at Estrella Independent Living; Wesleyan at Estrella Assisted Living/Memory Care; Heritage Oaks; Sun City Social Center; Sun City Cowan Creek; and Williamson County Juvenile Justice Center.     Michelle is working with the various organizations in our city that host children during the summer to establish the June through August route.

We raised over $5,000 at the Wine and Dine with Friends event on December 5th.  Delicious food was prepared by Wildfire and Tony & Luigi's.  FOL members prepared the appetizers and the desserts which were a big hit with the crowd.  Grape Creek Winery, the new winery in town which will open up their tasting room on the Square in July, donated the wine for the event.  Based upon the reaction of the guests, Grape Creek Winery will be a big success in Georgetown!            (click here to see more pics!)

We need some help in getting us over the hump to reach our goal of $150,000.  If you've been meaning to make a donation but haven't gotten around to it, please consider doing it now.  If you work or have worked for a company with a matching grant program, please apply for the matching funds.  We're getting really close to our goal…we'd appreciate your help in putting 'Words on Wheels' for the Georgetown citizenry who don't have easy access to the services of our wonderful library.

Georgetown Honors Dr. Morton King

About 100 citizens of Georgetown enjoyed lunch provided by the Monument Café and honored Dr. Morton King, a long-time member of the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library.  Dr. Jake Schrum, President of Southwestern University and Honorary Chair of the Bookmobile drive began the speeches with a short history of bookmobiles worldwide.  This was followed by a history of the Georgetown Public Library and a gentle roast of the honored guest.

The luncheon was dubbed as a tribute to "An Uncommon Reader."  As secretary of the Friends when it started, Dr. King was responsible for our first charter, the filing to obtain our IRS non-profit status, and the first by-laws.  As was mentioned in the short history, Dr. King was also a librarian's dream volunteer, spending many hours walking the stacks and other chores associated with a well-managed library. The audience laughed at stories about the parking tickets volunteers got when they moved the library from its first site to larger spaces, Morton's  "chilly lily" spottings that mark winter's start, and many other anecdotes Morton's long time friends shared for the occasion.

Dr. King's love for books included stories about his friendships with such notable writers as William Faulkner, Robert Penn Warren and Elizabeth Spencer.  The roast ended by reading an e-mail from Elizabeth Spencer that concluded, "I was always so pleased when Morton liked anything I wrote.  He is not only an uncommon reader, but an uncommon man."

Then it was Dr. King's moment to remind the audience that the event was really about raising money for the bookmobile.  Attendees helped raise just over $2000 for the WOW! Bookmobile drive.

MONTHLY MEETING --

Board meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at the Georgetown Public Library at 10 AM.  All Board meetings are open meetings, and all FOL members are welcome, although only Board members may vote.  It’s a great way to get to know the people involved in our organization.

BOOK CLUBS IN A BAG check it out!

The library introduced this new program in 2010. They have purchased ten copies each of 24 different works of fiction, placing each title in its own FOL book bag along with an author bio, book reviews and discussion questions. Book clubs can check out a title for up to two months. To see the available titles, check out the library website at http://library.georgetown.org/adults/book-clubs/ . This program is partially funded by the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library.

MUSIC LIVE  @ THE LIBRARY

This popular program is well into its second year and going strong! Rosa Garcia has done a great job of scheduling a variety of musical performers for the second Sunday of most months. The performers typically begin at 2 PM and play until 4 PM in the library lobby, where chairs are set up. Patrons are invited to come and go as they please. It’s not unusual to find all of the chairs on the first floor occupied, and more patrons in the comfortable seating on the ‘Bridge’ on the second floor, tapping their fingers and toes in time with the music.

The music program is funded by the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library, and other donations.
